      <image:caption>” I tend to gravitate towards material that can be a little dark,” says Sophie. The unreleased material Auster has been working on for the past two years has been a huge evolution for the gifted and prodigious 25-year-old singer/songwriter. “The material has matured and grown as I have gotten older. It’s a process to hone in on your own style. I think a lot of what I have been doing over the past few years is discovering my voice.” In 2007, she met writer/musician Barry Reynolds, who has worked with major artists such as Rufus Wainwright, Marianne Faithful, Antony and the Johnsons, Chorlotte Gainsbourg, and Grace Jones. The two formed a fast and lasting bond that translated into a freeing writing experience for Sophie. Reynolds and Auster have been writing together ever since. “I force myself to write everyday, but the best songs are the ones that pour out of you—the ones that are urgent.” In 2012 Sophie completed work on her new record, Red Weather, released in November 2012. The daring and soulful sound of this forthcoming effort highlights Sophie’s visceral vocals and heart-wrenching lyrics.  Her upcoming album will be released in early 2014.</image:caption>

Instead, they're here, on a beach with good friends and guitars, drinking cheap Mexican beer around a bonfire. Palmas' music has already captivated fans and critics alike. They’ve been playing sold-out shows for over a year and have been featured in publications such as NYLON, Noisey, and Daily Music Insider, all before officially releasing any music. Rehearsing in an off-season haunted house allows their surf-tinged tracks to come injected with an aura of fake blood, skulls, and zombies. PALMAS ride an eerily addicting line between sunny days and unnervingly dark nights. On tracks like “Stay Away,” the band evokes proof of their 1950s influence with reverberated guitar leads reminiscent of Nancy Sinatra or the opening of an original James Bond film. Their single “Ride the Wave," however, brings you back to a sun-soaked beach party of the present where you can hear distant echoes of Temples, Best Coast, and The Growlers. Perhaps the key to PALMAS’ balance of colorful surf-y leads and heart-wrenching nostalgia lies at the foot of their merch table. You’ll find it littered with old postcards bordered by twinkling lights. If you stare at one of those slowly fading, bent and twisted, “Hello from Florida” novelties long enough, you might get to follow PALMAS on their trip from a seemingly normal beach day to a smoke drenched dance floor that’s lost in time. In addition to premiering their music video for "Stay Away" via Noisey/Vice, PALMAS has recently announced their freshly signed deal with NYC label Lost Colony Music to release an A/B side “Stay Away”/“You Were My Girl” with an EP to follow in November.</image:caption>

However, with each release following Slow Road To Tiny Empire (Rykodisc), Gordon Zacharias, along with an ever-changing cast of East Coast heavyweights he refers to as “Fan Modine,” has delivered on that initial promise. 2004’s Homeland melds classic pop with an outsider artist’s sensibility. Following the bursting of the dot-com bubble, Homeland was written while Zacharias was living in a record store in Downtown Manhattan on a cot above the vinyl aisle and working as a professional dog walker for a host of Page 6 notables. The album went on to score high marks in the press, including an 8.0 in Pitchfork. After relocating to Carrboro, NC, Zacharias formed a solid lineup to promote the album’s release with Ash Bowie of Polvo, Jeremy Chatelain of Jets to Brazil, Lee Waters from Dean &amp; Britta, and Chuck Johnson from Shark Quest. This same lineup laid the groundwork for 2011’s Gratitude For The Shipper; an ambitious collection that retains the magic of the previous releases, with its lush orchestration and rich production courtesy of years of sporadic basement overdubs. Zacharias completed the record with help from indie pioneers Chris Stamey and Mitch Easter. The extravagance all nods to chamber pop heroes Procol Harum, The Left Banke and XTC, yet breaks new ground. Featuring vocal and guitar contributions by Joah Tunnel (Lost in the Trees) and Stevie Jackson (Belle and Sebastian), Cause Célèbre crashes down the gate of social divides and existential yearning -- with a nod to glam and psychedelia.
